Our work with Barnardos
Our association with Children’s Charity Barnardos is a newly established and developing relationship, one that we’re extremely proud of.
The two-year partnership kicked off with a series of free parenting skills seminars around the country delivered by Barnardos trainers. Seminars in Kildare, Galway, Limerick, Dublin and Cork were aimed at providing parents with the knowledge and skills to assist them in developing relationships with their children in a time poor era. Barnardos parenting trainer Imelda Graham outlined key elements of positive behaviour management and focused on how parents can have more fun with their children while ensuring their needs are met.
These seminars are demonstrative of our core principle of encouraging our members to use their health insurance to take control of all aspects of their lives - not just for illness. At the end of these seminars attendees were provided with information brochures. In tandem with the seminars, Aviva is making information on a vast area much more accessible.
We look forward to working closely with the team at Barnardos to develop this partnership over the next two years.
Our work with The Marie Keating Foundation
The Marie Keating Foundation is committed to providing all women and their families with the necessary information to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest stages. Their collective aim is to “enlighten not frighten”. At Aviva we want to help the foundation to achieve their goal. The Marie Keating Foundation work with a team of nurses who travel the length and breadth of Ireland educating men and women on the importance of early detection of cancer.
In 2007 our partnership with the Marie Keating Foundation literally reached new heights. As well as developing a road show of health screening and health consultation initiatives, Aviva CEO trekked to Everest Base Camp to raise awareness and funds for the Marie Keating Foundation’s ‘Men Giving Cancer the Boot’ campaign. As well as raising funds for the foundation Aviva also committed to distributing 100,000 information packs on the importance of early detection of cancer in both men and women.
Aviva was also the proud sponsor of the ‘Give men’s cancer the boot’ breakfast on March 13. Over the breakfast The Marie Keating Foundation launched research on men’s health issues, while attendees enjoyed a healthy breakfast and a Q&A session with a panel of health experts.
We work on a continuous basis with both Barnardos and The Marie Keating Foundation introducing their passion and good work to both our corporate and individual members at various road shows and worksite events through-out the country. If we can encourage one extra person to go for cancer screening or another parent to work on their relationship with their kids, that’s our reward.
Our work with the RCSI
Approximately 2000 women in Ireland are newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year. As yet the causes of breast cancer are not clearly understood but we do know that early detection greatly influences survival rates. For this reason we have partnered with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to sponsor their flagship fundraising event, The RCSI Race Against Breast Cancer Day. Aviva is proud to be the title sponsor of this event which has raised over €1,000,000 for breast cancer research since our involvement in November 2006.
This sponsorship also supports our ongoing campaign to highlight the issue of health screening among consumers in Ireland. Our research shows that only 23% of people have been screened for a potential illness in the past two years, a statistic that is worryingly low. We are focused on encouraging more people to avail of screening services and are intent on making this easier for people to do by broadening our screening cover.
We believe that by providing people with the tools to change their lifestyle and the ability to screen for potential illness, we give them the power to take more control of their health.
