Obesity 'increases risk of kidney stones'
Obesity could increase the chances of developing kidney stones, new research suggests.According to a study published in the Journal of Urology, the risk of developing kidney stones is almost doubled in people who are overweight or obese.
However, the findings showed that the degree of obesity had little effect, with both mildly and morbidly obese patients facing a similar risk of developing the problem.
Lead researcher Dr Brian Matlaga said: "The common thinking was that as weight rises, kidney stone risk rises as well, but our study refutes that.
"Whether someone is mildly obese or morbidly obese, the risk for getting kidney stones is the same."
The study looked at data from more than 95,000 people over a five-year period, during which 2.6 per cent of non-obese individuals and 4.9 per cent of obese patients were diagnosed with kidney stones.
According to Irish organisation safefood, some 59 per cent of adults in Ireland are currently classed as either overweight or obese.
