US scientists have made a breakthrough discovery that could one day lead to a cure for prostate cancer.Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles successfully created the cancer in the laboratory by genetically altering human stem cells.
They say the discovery will help shed further light on the way the disease attacks the body and could lead to the development of more effective drugs to fight it.
Dr Owen Witte, who led the research team, said the breakthrough could assist in the "fine tuning" of new anti-cancer treatments for sufferers of the disease.
According to the latest figures from the National Cancer Registry, more than 2,500 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in Ireland in 2007.
That means one in eleven Irish men now develops the disease during their lifetime.
The Registry also expects the number of cases to rise, predicting a 275 per cent increase in the incidence of prostate cancer by 2020.
