Heavy alcohol use linked to pancreatic cancer
Men have been warned against heavy alcohol use and binge drinking as it could increase their chances of getting pancreatic cancer.A team of researchers at Minnesota University in the US found a direct correlation between the amount of alcohol a man consumes and his risk of being affected by the disease.
The results of previous studies aimed at identifying a similar link have been inconsistent, but the team feels this study is more comprehensive as it took multiple factors into account, including the impact of binge drinking.
A total of 532 pancreatic cancer patients took part in the study, just over half of which were men, while 1,701 people without the disease also participated.
It was found those who consumed alcohol increased their risk of pancreatic cancer by 1.5 to six times compared to those who did not, or who had less than one drink per month.
A previous report in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention revealed a link between regular soft drink consumption and pancreatic cancer.
