Awareness day for common condition
A condition that affects as many as one in 83 Irish people will be the subject of an awareness day next week, the Irish Medical Times reports. The Irish Haemochromatosis Association (IHA) will hold the day on Thursday June 3rd to promote a wider understanding of the condition, which can be treated effectively if identified early.
Haemochromatosis sufferers absorb excessive quantities of iron, and it is more common in Ireland than any other country in the world.
Symptoms include chronic fatigue, joint pain, irregular heartbeat and loss of sex drive, and at its most potent the condition can lead to organ failure.
Experts are encouraging people to visit their doctors for regular check-ups and to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and this can help mitigate the impact of the condition.
The IHA's website encourages people to incorporate an exercise regime into their daily schedule and avoid foods fortified with iron.
